I guess children like stories because it's in their nature to be curious about how the story will unfold. They can be totally wrapped up in the plot and wondering whether there will be a happy ending. On top of that, children like stories because they can draw the moral of the stories. In a sense, they learn about the world in stores. For example, the story of the tortoise and hare teaches children the importance of persistence.
