I think in order to help children understand the plot, people usually simplified the happenings in a story. For example, some fairy tales used to be very vicious and horrifying. But the later versions changed the villain into someone less intimidating. Plus, the storytellers always add some voices to make children burst into laughter. For example, they will imitate the sound of an animal in a story to amuse the children.
